So, you find yourself interested in the world of voice acting, but not sure where to begin. Maybe you’re an actor who is looking to expand their portfolio or a teacher looking for a new profession. Whatever the case may be, the world of voice acting is an exciting industry and following these three tips can help get you on the right path.

Understanding Your Industry

Before you jump into something, it is important that you familiarize yourself with what it is you plan on getting into. Whether it’s cooking or construction, baking or banking, understanding your industry is vital to performance and future success. Voice acting is no different. It may seem like an elusive industry, but the more you study it, the more you start to break down the wall of uncertainty. Get involved in your industry through educating yourself on how the field of voice acting works. You will set yourself up for disappointment if you create unrealistic expectations of what you think will happen versus what will actually happen.

Training

In order to get better at anything you must practice and you must train. No matter how talented they were, even the best athletes in the world continuously trained. Training strengthens your abilities and conditions you for different scenarios and types of work. What works for one client may not necessarily work for the next and so on. Approaching any studio session with the mindset of “winging it” or coming up with something on the fly is a sure-fire way to find yourself without work quickly. Training helps to build confidence and technique that you might otherwise lack.

Promote Yourself

After you’ve done all the hard work of educating yourself and training, you can’t just sit back and expect the phone calls to come pouring in immediately. That’s not how it works. You have to promote yourself. Post your demos on line to increase your exposure and opportunities. This industry is about self-promotion and above all, promotion to the right people. Make sure the people and agents who you hand your demo to or who you sit down with specifically deal with voice acting. Don’t waste your time with people who wouldn’t know where to direct you or how to help you.
